“Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.”   (2Peter 1:20)

Was C.I. Scofield loyal to the King James version, or to the underlying Received Text?  …Not hardly !!!!

Scofield Reference Bible [1917] – Introduction, point XI.

XI. “After mature reflection it was determined to use the Authorized Version. None of the many Revisions have commended themselves to the people at large. The Revised Version, which has now been before the public for twenty-seven years, gives no indication of becoming in any general sense the people’s Bible of the English-speaking world. The discovery of the Sinaitic MS. and the labours in the field of textual criticism of such scholars as Griesbach, Lachmann, Tischendorf, Tregelles, Winer, Alford, and Westcott and Hort, have cleared the Greek textus receptus of minor inaccuracies, while confirming in a remarkable degree the general accuracy of the Authorized Version of that text. Such emendations of the text as scholarship demands have been placed in the margins of this edition, which therefore combines the dignity, the high religious value, the tender associations of the past, the literary beauty and remarkable general accuracy of the Authorized Version, with the results of the best textual scholarship.” ~The Old Scofield Reference Bible -1917 page iii – Introduction XI

Was 2Thessalonians 2:2 a “mistranslation” ?

Should it be ‘day of the Lord‘, or ‘day of Christ‘ ?

Does it really matter ?  Is every word, important ?

C.I. Scofield was a Shyster!!!

The following is an excerpt from the Topeka, Kansas newspaper, The Daily Capital, dated August 27, 1881. To our knowledge, this account of C.I. Scofield was never challenged:

“CYRUS I. SCHOFIELD IN THE ROLE OF A CONGREGATIONAL MINISTER” – “Cyrus I. Schofield, formerly of Kansas, late lawyer, politician and shyster generally, has come to the surface again, and promises once more to gather around himself that halo of notoriety that has made him so prominent in the past. The last personal knowledge that Kansans have had of this peer among scalawags, was when about four years ago, after a series of forgeries and confidence games he left the state and a destitute family and took refuge in Canada. For a time he kept undercover, nothing being heard of him until within the past two years when he turned up in St. Louis, where he had a wealthy widowed sister living who has generally come to the front and squared up Cyrus’ little follies and foibles by paying good round sums of money. Within the past year, however, Cyrus committed a series of St. Louis forgeries that could not be settled so easily, and the erratic young gentleman was compelled to linger in the St. Louis jail for a period of six months… …Among the many malicious acts that characterized his career, was one peculiarly atrocious, that has come under our personal notice. Shortly after he left Kansas, leaving his wife and two children dependent upon the bounty of his wife’s mother, he wrote his wife that he could invest some $1,300 of her mother’s money, all she had, in a manner that would return big interest. After some correspondence he forwarded them a mortgage, signed and executed by one, Chas. Best, purporting to convey valuable property in St. Louis. Upon this, the money was sent to him. Afterwards the mortgages were found to be base forgeries, no such person as Charles Best being in existence, and the property conveyed in the mortgage fictitious…”[1]

Any KJV without notes &/or formatting is better than a Scofield Reference Bible—but, especially one that follows the same paragraph markers (pilcrows) as given in the AV1611… In Matthew 24, for instance, all that the AV translators give us are the paragraph markers that align with their subtitles—and, these markers supply the answers to the disciples’ questions in v3 (see pic)… however, Scofield ERASES the translators’ paragraph points and ADDS (ignoring serious Bible warnings against this sort of thing) his own slant into the text— including a subtitle between vss14-15 –“the great tribulation”… No Where in the entire KJV can one find those three words together, “the-great-tribulation”, let alone justification for inserting them between vss14-15. In Scofield’s Matthew 24, there are as many of his own words on that page(#1033) as there are God’s… and, most damaging of all— Scofield rerouted the answers that Jesus gave (& that the AV translators aligned with the subtitles & paragraph markers) into something else— Matthew 24 in the AV 1611 looks VERY different than Scofield’s Matthew 24— and, now, most cheap knock-off editions follow Scofield’s new chapter breaks, rather than the AV 1611… here are their original paragraph markers & subpoints———
AV 1611 Translators’ Heading Points – Matt. 24: 1, 3, 29, 36, 42
Verse 1 – “Christ foretelleth the destruction of the temple”
(continuing the “house left desolate” context from chapter 23)
Verse 3 – “What, and how great calamities shall be before it”
(notice: the translators included the context of vss. 3-28 as being before [i.e. AD 70] the Temple’s destruction!)
Verse 29 – “The signs of His coming to judgment”
(vss. 29-35 would be the signs of His Return, etc.! These verses include the gathering with a great sound of a trumpet!)
Verse 36 – “And because that day and hour is unknown”
(vss. 36-41 compare the days to that of Noah’s day—suddenly, and without exact determination of when it will begin)
Verse 42 – “We ought to watch like good servants expecting every moment our master’s coming”
(vss. 42-51 teach us all to watch and be ready, as faithful servants—God wants every generation to be as watchful as were those in times past)

“Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.”  (2Peter 1:20)

It is truly a shame that more pastors, churches, and Christians of 100 years ago didn’t denounce this new “styling of the Bible” as a heresy!  That’s why we’re trying to make up for it, now!

Scofield subtly inserted new chapter subdivisions, never seen in the KJV, before.   Yet, so many, who claim to be “KJV-only”, are still using the Scofield Reference Bible , with his twisted formatting.

This photo was taken from the Facebook page of a Baptist pastor [posted in the Fall of 2021]…

He admits the SRB has “flaws”, but he still “loves” how Mr. Scofield added “training wheels” to the Bible, anyhow.
